About the law

In 2003, House Bill 1247, championed by Republican leaders and signed into law by Governor Brad Henry, required the legislature to “fund education first”—no later than April 1st.

The idea behind the law was simple: give local school districts the financial certainty they need to make budget decisions for the coming year.

Since its passage, lawmakers have only met the deadline once.

Lawmakers should follow the law and fund education by their April 1st deadline.

When lawmakers fail to fund education first, our students and teachers pay the cost. Tell them to follow the law today.
